The tag office cannot guarantee a prebill will be received in the mail.

Motor Vehicle tag renewals are due on the owner’s birthday. If you were a resident of Brooks County last year and renewed your tag in Brooks County last year, then you should receive a bill 60 days prior to your birthday in the mail. If you did not, bring your registration with tag number to the Tax Commissioner’s Office.

Your insurance information must be electronically transmitted by your insurance company and electronically matched to the Georgia Department of Motor Vehicle Safety’s record for your vehicle.

Effective January 1, 2004, Georgia County Tag Offices and Georgia Law Enforcement officers must verify insurance in the computer and cannot use an individual’s insurance card for valid proof of insurance for any motor vehicle with the exception of any vehicle covered by Fleet Insurance Policy or a Self Insurance Policy.

The penalty for late registration is 10% of the tax and 25% of the tag fee. These penalties begin immediately following the due date (midnight of your birthday).

Current registration cards along with the owner’s valid Georgia Driver’s License. Georgia drivers License must reflect your current Brooks County address!

New Purchases

From a dealer:
All vehicles must be registered within 30 days of purchase. No one can register a car in the state of Georgia with out a title applied for at the time of registration or a dealer/lien holder applying for a title. Other items you will need are:
1. Acceptable proof of insurance.
2. Georgia Driver’s License or copy of primary owner’s Driver’s License with Brooks County address.

From an individual:
All vehicles must be registered within 7 days of purchase. Items you will need are:
1. Title from individual selling vehicle – correctly signed.
2. Acceptable proof of insurance.
3. Georgia Driver’s License with a Brooks County address.
4. Current Mileage – unless exempt.

Vehicle Trade-Ins:
If you trade in a vehicle, keep your old tag. As long as the tag and the vehicle are in the same name we can transfer that tag to your new vehicle.

Out of State Purchases:
If you purchased a vehicle out of state, you may be liable to pay sales tax to Georgia before we can apply for your title and issue a tag.

You are required to title all 1986 and newer vehicles prior to registration. All owners need to be present with valid identification and acceptable proof of insurance.

If you cancel your insurance for any reason, please contact our office at 229-263-4586 to cancel your registration. If you do not do this, you will receive a letter from the state with a $25 lapse fee. If you fail to comply and pay that fee you will get an additional fine of $65.

Titling a Vehicle

Most vehicles require a title in order to prove your ownership of that vehicle.

Vehicles that require a registration and a title:

• Passenger vehicles
• Buses
• 1986 and newer model vehicles
• Trucks and cargo vehicles
• Travel trailers, campers, and horse trailers
• Motor homes
• Trailers weighing more than 2,000 pounds

Vehicles that require a registration only:

• 1962 and older model vehicles
• Boats and boat trailers
• Homemade trailers
• Utility trailers weighing 2,000 pounds or less
• 1963 – 1985 model vehicles (Titling is optional)

Vehicles that require no registration or title in Georgia:

• Out-of-State student/business vehicles
• Mopeds
• Off Road Vehicles
• Self-propelled wheelchairs or invalid tricycles

Lost Titles

If you have lost your Georgia title, you may request a replacement by submitting a complete title application along with your check or money order and a copy of your ID to 601 South Highland Rd., Quitman, GA 31643. Please be sure that all owners have signed the application. Alternatively, you may visit our office to request a replacement. The cost for a replacement title is $8.00. All owners must be present to sign the application. Please allow 7-10 business days after application to receive your replacement title through the mail. If you need a replacement title sooner, you may visit the Georgia Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle Division in Atlanta for an expedited title*.

If you were making payments on your vehicle and you did not receive a title from your lien holder, you will need a lien release from them before applying. A lien release says that you have paid off your car loan.

New Residents and Lost Titles

If you just moved from another state and you lost your out-of-state title, you need to contact the state where your vehicle was registered for a replacement title. If you were making payments on your vehicle, your lien holder might not have the title. Some states send the title to you even though you have a lien.

These states include:

• Arizona (purchased before 1/1/2003)
• Kentucky
• Maryland
• Michigan
• Minnesota
• Missouri (purchased after 7/1/2003)
• Montana
• New York
• Oklahoma
• South Dakota
• Wisconsin
• Wyoming

If this is the case and you lost your out-of-state title, you need to contact the last state where your vehicle was registered for a replacement title.

Leasing

If you are leasing your car contact your leasing company and request a Limited Power of Attorney for the vehicle to be registered. You will need that original limited power of attorney, acceptable proof of insurance, copy of the title, leasing agreement and a Georgia Driver’s License with a Brooks County address.

Taxes

Taxes on Motor Vehicles are due on the owner’s birth date unless you are under the new TAVT program. Vehicles owned by a business pay tax based on the first letter of the Business name. The annual ad valorem tax is based on the 40% value of the vehicle. Taxes are due on a vehicle, even when the vehicle is not in use.

Fees

• Tag Fee (regular tag) for passenger vehicles and trucks with gross weight up to 14,000 – $20.00
• Replacement Tag/Sticker Fee – $8.00
• Title Transfer Fee – $18.00
• Replacement Title Fee – $8.00
• Trailers with a gross vehicle weight of less than 2,000 pounds are not required to be titled in Georgia. The previous registration is required. Fee – $12.00
• Trucks with a gross vehicle weight over 14,000 (Truck and load) fees are based on the weight.
